How to set up integration with Vessel HIN LookUp

Learn how to automatically fill in the manufacturer, model, year of manufacture, and other boat specifications based on its code to avoid errors and save time

HIN (Hull Identification Number) is a unique identification number for a vessel’s hull, serving as a sort of “VIN code” for watercraft. It contains encrypted information about the vessel’s origin and technical specifications.

The “Vessel HIN Lookup” integration is a specialized service that allows the system to instantly recognize vessel data based on its identifier. It converts a set of characters into a detailed asset card by accessing up-to-date databases. Thanks to automated search, you’ll eliminate routine work and the risk of errors, obtaining all necessary vessel data with a single click.

Please note: HIN is an American standard. Foreign-built vessels may not have one, so a search for them may return incomplete data or fail to find the vessel at all.

In this article, you’ll learn how to activate the integration, correctly configure field mappings for accurate data transfer, and use the automatic vessel search feature to instantly populate information in orders.

This integration is available on the “Startup” plan and above.

How to enable and configure the integration

1. On the Settings > Integrations > Other page, find the Vessel HIN Lookup integration and click the “Configure” button.

2. Check the “Integration enabled” checkbox.

3. Select the asset group for which automatic identification will work.

Please note that asset groups are created and configured in the multi-level asset directory on the Settings > Directories > Asset Directory page.

4. Map the vessel fields to the asset form fields.

On the left, you’ll see fields with vessel information available in the configured integration: Manufacturer, Model, Modification, Year, Serial Number, HIN Type, State Issued.

On the right, select the corresponding field in the asset form.

Important: The State Issued field can only be linked to a “Checkbox” type field. Make sure you have added the corresponding field to the asset form.

🎯 Please note that you can configure the asset form on the “Settings > Form Editor > Assets” page.

5. Click “Save”.

Done! The integration is enabled and configured.

How auto-fill works using HIN-based vessel search

1. When creating an asset or placing an order, enter the correct HIN code for the boat in the “Serial Number” system field.

This can be either a 12-character HIN or a 14-character format with a country prefix.

2. Click the magnifying glass icon to search.

If the entered HIN code is correct, the other asset fields you specified in the integration settings will be automatically filled with vessel information.

If the entered value is incorrect (for example, insufficient characters or the number is not registered), the other asset fields will remain empty. In this case, we recommend double-checking the entered number or entering the data manually.
