How to create a new work order based on a previous one

Learn how to quickly create a linked work order from a previous one—and maintain a single numbering system for the entire chain

Continue in new work order is an additional action within a work order; it is designed to create a new work order linked to the previous one. This feature is available regardless of the current work order’s status.

To create a new work order based on a previous one:

  1. Open the desired work order.

  2. Click Actions > Continue in new work order.

  3. Fill in the required information in the new document and save it.

When you use this feature, the system instantly creates a linked document, automatically populating its main system fields with data from the original work order:

  • Order Type

  • Client

  • Payer

  • Asset

The new work order receives the same number as the original, plus a suffix separated by a fraction—so it’s immediately clear that they are linked:

  • /1—for the first linked work order (for example, No. A500/1);

  • /2—for the second linked work order (for example, No. A500/2), and so on.

It doesn’t matter which work order in the chain the new one is created from—whether it’s the original or one of the copies—the numbering always starts from the original number.

If one of the work orders in the chain is deleted, the number is not reused—for example, if No. 500/3 is deleted, the next work order created will still be assigned No. 500/4.

If the previous work order is still open, this feature helps manage multiple parallel processes within a single customer inquiry when both work orders need to remain active simultaneously—for example, when a separate component repair is added to a general car repair, or when wheel alignment is added to seasonal tire service.

If the previous work orders have already been closed, this feature comes in handy when a client returns with an issue directly related to previously completed work—for example, when processing and documenting warranty inquiries.
